Jupiter Network Cabbage Head Duathlon
The last race in the Mile High Duathlon Series, sponsored by Tanner's Jupiter Network http://www.jupiternetwork.com/ , was today. Tanner didn't race today. Something about some little Iron Man race in Germany. That was a whole week ago. He gave Darrin 2 17" flat screen monitors to give to some deserving racers who did the whole series. Neither of the winners were quite as deserving as me . Remember to contact Tanner if you need your Jupiters (or any other large, gas planets) linked up. The only breeze today was the solar wind. The Elite wave took off first then 2 minutes later my wave went. The only person ! spoke to in my wave was a tax client ! picked up from my sponsorship of the Chilly Cheeks Series. He had promised to beat me this time. Go! ! was off the front running an easy 6 minute pace as ! always do. It took the runners nearly a 1/4 mile to get in front of me. Then some more passed by. ! hit mile 1 @ 6:45 then slowed down to average 7:07s. My "friend" got by w/ 1/2 a mile to go on the 1st run. He only held on for a couple minutes until ! got back by him. T1 went well. Onto the bike and soon flying. The course was mostly flat w/ 2 turn arounds @ 6.1 and 12.5 miles. Two big guys rode by me. ! wiggled my nose and muttered some incantations, but they just kept going. After the 1st turn ! saw Jack. ! had made 0.4 miles on him. ! saw him again after turn 2. By then ! was up 1.2 miles. ! was calculating ! would pass him inbound @ about the 1 mile mark and beat him by 10 minutes. The calculatin' only lasted a bit as ! was soon distracted by the perfectly round shadow being cast by my disc wheel. That was on the longest straight section and el Sol was directly to my right. Before ! knew it, or hit anything, it was time to turn. Into T2 ! was concerned ! had overdone the ride. The marshall @ the run start told me ! was "really tearing it up". Inspired, ! haulled ass until ! got around the corner where they couldn't see me. The second 5k was tougher than the 1st one. ! soldiered onward a bit slower than 8 minute pace. About 2 miles ! passed one of the guys who dropped me on the bike and ! could see the other one ahead. No Jack. ! was concerned he had flatted or crashed. He flatted and walked in 3 miles. Less than 1/2 a mile to go and there was some chick trying to run me down so ! picked up the pace. The other big guy was coming back to me. Two blocks to go and they were both behind me and probably pissed. ! had to really turn it on to keep them down. !'m sure ! negative split that last mile. What a sad state of affairs when ! start running down guys who don't have a pack of smokes rolled up in their sleeve. The lovely and talented Steve Kovisto claimed he was sick for the last 2 weeks so instead of the usual 8 minute ass whooping he's been giving me, today was just a 2 minute sneer. He really must have been off since he only managed 3rd in his age group instead of winning like the last 2 races. Still it was enough for him to win the series and $$$. ! ended up tied for 11th in the series w/ all the other guys who scored 0 points.
