Cherry Creek Time Trial Series
CCTT started April 12th this year. Last night was the 3rd race in the series. 1st race ! did 27:30. 2nd race ! did 27:09. 21 seconds faster. My PR was 26:46. Last night it was kind of windy when ! got out there, but it died down mostly by start time. ! was a little slower on the 1st part than usual. ! got to the big climb and hammered it. ! stayed @ 18mph most of the way up. Used to be ! would blow and do the climb about 12-13mph. ! was hurting coming over the top. The guy who started 20 seconds behind me was still in sight. He's pretty fast. Around the Tower Loop he was opening the gap. ! kept after him. he kept pulling away. ! was watching my heart monitor and decided ! wasn't working hard enough. Also, ! recalled that Daneille Haulman had beaten me by a few seconds last week and ! didn't want that to happen again. ! picked up the pace and after running about 29mph for a while ! realized ! had a good tailwind to push me back to the finish. ! decided to make the most of it and try to make up as much time as ! could that ! lost on the way out w/ the head wind. ! was @ 13:44 coming around the half way loop so ! was expecting about 27:30. After crossing the finish, ! checked my time. ! was amazed to see 26:44. That would be a new PR. The official time was even better. 26:42. Wheeeeee! A 27 second improvement over last week. Average speed was 23.8 mph w/ a max of 36.7 mph
1st Tri of the year
Yesterday (4.22.6) was Industrial Revolution Day since Capitalism is the only reason we have time, energy and wealth to devote to such frivolity as saving the earth and triathlon etc. Back in the day you’d be lucky to make 40 years. And all of those years starting as early as you could do physical labor would be spent struggling to survive for 10-12 hours every day. Today was the earth day tri. 500 yd pool swim then drive to the bike/run venue. It’s all on non-technical trails so ! rode the Jackal. She’s my ‘cross bike. 7.5 mile bike (3 laps) and 2.5 mile run (2 laps). ! thought my swim was pretty good until ! looked up last year's time. ! slipped back 8 seconds. 8:04. Best time was like 6:18 and the record is 5:09. My lane mate was wearing an Mdot pendant so ! asked her which IM she did. She rattled off 5. ! lapped her. ! think the 13 year old kid is the one that was torqued last year about his swim time in the mid 6s. He did 6:36 today. ! made up that time before the end of the 2nd (of 3) lap on the bike and never saw him again. ! was too busy chasing the MTB chick w/ the pastel blue helmet. W/ her fat tires she got by me on the sketchy descent. ! beat her up the big climb next lap and she got past again. ! hunted her down and hit T2 about 10 seconds ahead and didn't give up anything in Transition. Of course that meant ! had to outrun her for 2.5 miles. She won the girls 25-29 age group long enough after me that ! could stand on my own and breathe already. ! was having trouble keeping my eye on her on the 2nd lap since a mob was just starting the run right in front of me. That's right. ! beat quite a few out of T2 by enough to run 1.25 miles. ! think my time was 56-58 minutes. The winners of the men and women overall and my age group were faster. ! would have won my old age group. Based on where the officials parked the Jackal it seems ! was 7th overall into T2 and no one ran past me. So there. Results and photos aren't posted yet. http://www.thetpi.com/

1st Brick of the Year
For those who don't know, a "brick" is a multisport workout in which the disturbed (that would be me) does one type of workout followed by another. Most of the time it's a bike ride followed by a run since that is the toughest transition. Somehow ! had Thursday off work and since the only other option ! had was doing dishes and changing my oil, ! decided to go for a long ride. Up Lookout mountain and back is 45 miles so ! added a few laps around Wash. Park to get to 56 miles. ! slammed some Gatorade and changed clothes and went for a 13.2 mile easy trail run on the Cherry Creek trail. Even though the forecast was for a high of 54* and rain and wind in the morning, it turned out to be a really nice day. Most of the run was shirtless. ! have a light sunburn on my shoulders and real tan lines. The 4.5 mile climb up lookout took 32 1/2 minutes. That's really slow. The record is just under 20 minutes. The descent took 11:50. ! tend to over-hydrate before a ride and today was no exception. ! must have peed 10 times before ! got home. ! decided ! could do the run w/out any water since ! have been doing that distance twice a week for nearly a month now. That was a mistake. It was much warmer and after a 4 hour ride ! was starting out dehydrated. ! made it. Why do these distances? They are half IronMan lengths. 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run. !'ve been doing the run for a while and !'m actually starting to enjoy it. Also, Thursday night is the club swim and it is usually a little more that 1.2 miles so ! could say ! actually did a 1/2 IM today. Last September ! did Harvest Moon 1/2 and my legs cramped @ the start of the run so ! needed to test myself. !'ve signed up for 2 1/2s this year. The long runs have really surprised me. In the past ! would run because ! had to. ! never really built a base. Just went straight to the speed building which is pretty much the same as building your house on a foundation of jello. !'ve been working a lot and the weather hasn't really been conducive to pleasant bike riding so !'ve been running. "Train the weakness" Build a base. Running is great aerobic conditioning for the limited time available. Now !'m starting to enjoy it more than ! have in the past.
